Bloodbath: How newly wed was butchered by invaders

The protracted skir-mishes between the native Tiv communities of Benue State and Fulani herdsmen which have in recent time defied all peace initiatives suddenly took a turn for the worst early in the week with the sacking of Udei community in Guma Local Government Area by an army of Fulani mercenaries who invaded the community.
In these latest onslaught no fewer than 15 persons, including a soldier and newly wedded, Lieutenant Chinedu Ikenna Anyanwu, the Commander of the troops deployed from the 72 Battalion of the Nigerian Army, to maintain the peace in the volatile community lost their lives.

Lt Chinedu Ikenna Anyanwu(r) and his wife shortly after their wedding
The attack left scores sustaining serious gunshot and machete injuries with women and children dislodged from their homes, while property, farmland, economic trees and food barns were destroyed by the rampaging mercenaries.
The lingering skirmishes have turned what is popularly known as the MINDA axis of Benue State into a theatre of war of some sort in view of the fact that just not too long ago a group of Fulani herdsmen also stormed Mbagwen community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, killing and maiming anyone.
That came just few days after a similar bloodbath in Gwer West Local Government of the state, which left over 8,000 persons homeless with no source of livelihood as houses, huts and food storage barns were also destroyed by same invaders.
Worst hit by the carnage were women and children most of whom took shelter at nearby forests and bushes.
In that heart-rendering incident, the invaders who were suspected to be Fulani mercenaries marched from Tse Abatse Mbabegh all through to Tse Joo, a distance of over 30 kilometres, with little or no resistance from the native Tiv inhabitants.
But this latest attack seems more gruesome and devastating considering the frightening dimension the hostility has taken and the cold-blooded murder of two military personnel drafted to the war zone to maintain the peace in the volatile area.
Vanguard Metro,VM, gathered from Terlumun Igba, one of the victims of the attack who alongside other victims have taken refuge at the North Bank Motor Garage and Saint Mary’s Catholic School in Makurdi, that the assailants had stormed their community in the early hours of Monday, shooting and maiming all in sight.
Igba disclosed that the assailants also burnt down their houses, huts, farmland and economic trees.
“They stormed our villages, shooting and destroying everything in sight. So many were injured but at least six persons must have been killed,” Igba informed.

*Some villagers displaced following the attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen
Another victim of the attack, Tersoo Shima who witnessed the murder of Lt. Ikenna but escaped with bullet wound on his buttocks narrated his ordeal to VM after being rescued by soldiers and brought to the Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi where he is currently receiving medical attention.
According to him: “When the Fulanis attacked our community, at the early hours of Sunday, soldiers came to restore peace and I volunteered to take them to the route from where the Fulanis were launching their attacks.
“As we were marching towards the direction we ran into an ambush laid by the Fulanis; immediately they sight us they (the Fulanis) opened fire on us; but noticing the overwhelming fire power of the attackers, the soldiers decided to beat a retreat in order to re-enforce.
“It was in bid to retreat that the invaders chased after us. It was at that point that the Commander of the soldiers was shot; I was also shot and fell down because I couldn’t move my legs anymore. I also noticed that the army officer that was protecting me from behind also fell down while the other soldiers who did not know that we had gone went and regrouped.
“But at that point, I managed to crawl to a pit and covered myself with grasses. But from where I was I noticed that the invaders got to the spot where the soldiers were lying helpless and I heard some of them speaking and abusing the officer in different strange languages other than Hausa and Fulani. I heard them hacking him with their cutlasses”.
Tersoo explained that after killing Lt. Anyanwu who only got married some four weeks ago, the attackers also beat a retreat and few minutes later he saw a truck load of soldiers arriving the scene and he shouted for help and immediately identified himself.
“They came to my rescue and asked if I saw their Oga. I pointed to where the attackers caught up with him and slaughtered him”.
He stressed that the soldiers rescued him and also recovered the remains of the slain officer.
As he fought back tears he said: “They (the soldiers) were the ones who rescued me and brought me here (Federal Medical Centre) for medical attention”.
He, however, lamented that his wife and children were still missing, pleading that the state and Federal governments wade into the matter so as to save his people from annihilation.
It was also discovered that facilities at the Federal Medical Centre in Makurdi has been overstretched in the last few days following the sudden surge in the number of patients with machete and gunshot injuries from the crisis zone.
The crisis has also triggered off massive influx of persons fleeing from the affected villages into Makurdi town, thereby creating a massive humanitarian crisis in the North Bank area of Makurdi and Daudu Town where the state government opened a camp for the displaced.
Meanwhile Military authorities have arrested an eight-man militia gang suspected of being behind the heinous killing of two military officers on a peace keeping mission in crisis-torn community.
The suspects who were brought to the Benue State Police Headquarters by officers of the 72 Battalion of the Nigeria Army, were handed over to the Police for further investigations and prosecution.
VM gathered from an impeccable source that the gang was a part of a larger gang of militia that unleashed terror in Udei.
Lamenting the level of destruction in his constituency, Mr. David Iorhemba representing Guma State constituency at the State House of Assembly regretted that his people would be faced with the challenge of an impending famine, since according to him, the mercenaries systematically destroyed all farmlands in the communities, thereby creating a sense of food insecurity in the affected villages.
Iorhemba said: “We have a major crisis situation in our hands at the moment because apart from being displaced, the future looks gloomy for my people whose mainstay, which is their farmlands, has all been destroyed”.
The lawmaker pleaded with his colleagues, public-spirited individuals and organisations to come to the rescue of the people whom he said are faced with a looming starvation.
Meanwhile, a Benue State Government delegation led by the Deputy Governor, Chief Steven Lawani and Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Prince Terzoo has visited the crisis zone with a plea on the people to observe restraint and further shed of blood.
Lawani who condemned the heinous murder of the army officers also lamented the level of destruction in the community. He assured that the state government would take steps to find lasting solution to the protracted crisis.
The government directed the Sate Emergency Relief Agency to take urgent steps to provide succor to the displaced persons, most of whom are women and children. And as part of deliberate moves to put an end to the bloodbath, the Deputy Governor also immediately inaugurated a six-man panel of enquiry, under the chairmanship of Mr. Cletus Upaav, a former federal lawmaker, with the responsibilities of finding the immediate and remote causes of the crisis.
Inaugurating the committee in Makurdi, Chief Lawani informed that the committee would liaise with its counterpart from Nasarawa State in the bid to finding lasting solution to the protracted crisis.

NTA TV Host, Funmi Iyanda turns down being a presenter on CNN

She explains why “Surely, that would have taken my career backward. Why would I want to be a presenter on CNN when I make shows that CNN would happily commission and buy? I have been offered several shows to produce and host for a number of international platforms. Two are in development, both are continental and audacious. If CNN offered me my own Piers Morgan type of gig, then yes! You know what would be great? If I am able to do the same for a coalition of NTA, AIT and Channels. Right now the policies and economies that are against it are daunting but time will tell.”

While you do please tell her also to concentrate in taking care of her children as i am doing too, and stop wasting her time discussing me as i am not the cause of her failed marriage.

Kolade, was claimed to be a born again Christian, and Titilayo had been married for two years and had a daughter. No one knows exactly what transpired the day he killed his wife, only, family and friends got worried when Titi didn't show up at work or contact anyone for days. BIG BROTHER AMPLIFIED: Weza has a crush on Alex

“I had a crush on you since Day 1″, said Weza to Alex. It didn’t come as much of a shock to Bumaye, because he has been told far too many times that he was talk of the Headschicks.
Upon her entry into the Tails House, Weza told Alex the girls in the Heads House played a truth or dare game where it was revealed that most of them had a crush on him and hated on Millicent for having been the first one to kiss him.
Millicent confirmed the factuality of Weza’s story and told Alex she has had to endure so much animosity for the incident she had with him, long after he had left the Heads House.

Weza’s timing for declaring her liking for Alex leaves a lot to be desired, as she has already spent two weeks in the same House as Alex but has not said a word; it had to take Millicent’s entrance to the Tails House for her to admit liking him.

Women now sleep at fuel stations to get kerosine in Bayelsa

Women, nursing mothers and pregnant women who kept vigil searching for kerosene at a mega station owned by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. Most of these nursing mothers have turned the filling station to their homes as they spent nights in an open space around the area despite the harsh weather. The women, who decried their experience, depended on food vendors for feeding in the rowdy station located on the Sanni Abacha Expressway, Yenagoa.

It was also found that most of the women who risked their lives and those of their unborn babies and little babies were merely looking for the product to enable them to prepare food for their families especially as other alternatives of cooking like firewood were lacking in the state.

BIG BROTHER AFRICA: Houses Merge

Monday, June 27, 2011 marked a surprising change as the Heads and Tails houses of the Big Brother Amplified were merged as one, creating a moment of fun as the remaining 16 housemates of the TV show unite for the time since the first week it all began. A great reunion which brought the Heads housemates blindfolded from the Chat Room one by one into the Tails’ house. Housemates were left wondering as none of them was called for nomination.
Series of events unfolded at dinner time starting with the stunned Heads Housemates seeing Hanni being called into the Chat Room. Unbeknown to them, she was then blindfolded and led to the Glass House. After standing in the Glass House for a while, she took tentative steps towards the Tails door – and there was uproar when she was spotted by the Tails Housemates. Several minutes after the departure of Hanni, the Heads House began to wonder what was going on, with Vina guessing that a twist in the game was afoot. One by one, the Heads Housemates were led into various spots around the Tails House, with each surprise ‘delivery’ sparking enthusiastic greetings, hugs and tears.

The excited housemates after the merge scrambled to fill each other in on what had been happening in both houses over the past couple of weeks. Vina was the one who immediately saw the curveball for what it was, mumbling under her breath about how much tougher the game will be, going forward. Karen, Bernadina, Mumba and Kim set about filling everyone in on what had happened in the Tails House: from Lotus slapping Luclay and subsequently being disqualified to revealing the relationships that had grown.

In all these excitements, the Housemates have yet to consider what the merge and lack of nominations will result into come Sunday.

Jezebel may have clowned D'Banj, but American blogger Sandra Rose had nice things to say...

Here's what Sandra Rose wrote on her blog: "Kanye West recently signed 2 Nigerian artists to his G.O.O.D. Music label. One of them is D’banj, who, according to Upscale Hype, attended the 2011 BET Awards styled in a pair of Christian Louboutin Mika Raja flats ($2,395) from the Spring/Summer 2011 Collection. I would rather see a man dressed like D’banj than one dressed like those untamed beasts who roam the urban landscape with their pants hanging off their butts, like Lil Wayne and that ilk. We have to do better."

D'Banj's shoes is almost N400k? Damn, too much money!

The man who bombed the Nigeria Police Force headquarters in Abuja on June 16 was a fairly well-to-do businessman who was actually on a suicide mission on behalf of the Islamic sect the Boko Haram. Mohammed Manga was a 35-year-old married man with five children who drove overnight from Maiduguri to Abuja in order to carry out the morning attack which left about five people dead and many cars incinerated in the blast.

New lawmakers to receive one billion naira for accommodation

With the National Assembly quarters in Abuja retained by their outgoing counterparts, the 343 new lawmakers at the National Assembly are to draw between N3 million and N5 million for new houses as they resume work this week.
The Assembly leaders said the amount is to cover annual rental cost for new accommodation for each legislator, after a controversial government monetisation policy transferred titles for the Abuja Apo legislative quarters to former lawmakers who were not reelected.
The ownership rule has drawn the condemnation of some legislators as they face a raft of uncertainties, as the Senate and the House of Representatives resume legislative duties. Each new Senator is receiving N5 million for a new place in the federal capital territory after an initial demand for N7 million (and an upward rental fee for three years) were reportedly rejected by the senate leadership.
The 264 new members of the House of Representatives are getting between N3.5 million and N4.5 million, sources say. But the new entrants into the hunt for houses have already caused a surge in real estate value in choice areas within Abuja, complicating the accommodation controversy, with some legislators urging a reversal.
Within the city centre, for instance, houses that went for N1.5 million a year ago, are reportedly now being let out at N3 million.
“The major problem we are facing now is the problem of accommodation for the new senators. Many of them may not be able to concentrate in legislative proceedings because for now they do not have a place to stay,” Smart Adeyemi, a returning senator from Kogi state, said.
Mr Adeyemi spoke last week as both chambers faced the prospect of a tardy resumption with many of the new members without houses ahead of Tuesday’s reopening.
“We cannot even talk about hotels because where is the money for that. That is why the Apo legislative quarters should not have been sold in the first place. If the houses were to be there now, they will just pack in and start work, even if with ordinary mattress.
“Those behind the monetisation policies should have known that new senators are elected every four years, so there should be provision for that so that the new senators can move in. I think the proper thing to do is for government to reverse the sale of Apo and return monies back to those that bought the houses,” Mr Adeyemi added.
The three-week break was announced by both chambers shortly after inauguration to allow for the provision of home and office accommodation for the members.
The House has said office spaces for members will not be ready until August ending as contractors had announced a longer delivery time than expected. The deputy dpeaker, Emeka Ihedioha, said the House would however proceed with the June 28 resumption while improvised arrangements were made for the members as they resume.

Man Remanded For Touching Woman’s Breast

A 34-year old man, Effiong Edet, who touched a woman’s breast without her consent has been sent to Kirikiri Prison Apapa, Lagos State Southwest Nigeria.
He was remanded after he was arraigned before the court for allegedly assaulting a woman, Adijatu Sanni.
Adijatu also claimed that Edet did not only touch her breast, but also fondled her, including  her private part thereby debasing her as a woman.
The embittered woman lamented that since Edet has touched her breast and private part, he has used her to satisfy his sexual desire without her consent.

She went to Trinity Police Station and reported that Edet assaulted her.
The police arrested and charged him to Apapa Magistrate’s court for assault under Sections 358 and 355 of the criminal code cap 17 Vol. 2 Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria.
When the charge was read to him, he pleaded not guilty.
The presiding Magistrate, Mrs. A K Shonubi, granted the accused bail.
He was remanded in Kirikiri Prison Apapa, pending when he will fulfil his bail conditions.

Missy Elliott says Graves' disease not so grave

Rap star Missy Elliott on Friday insisted her battle with the thyroid malady Graves' disease has not sidelined her career, a day after it was revealed that she has the ailment.
"I was diagnosed with Graves' disease about three years ago, but it really hasn't slowed me down at all," Elliott said in a written statement.
Elliott, who gained fame in the 1990s and whose hit songs include "Get Ur Freak On" and "Work It," has won four Grammys but has not released an album since 2005's "The Cookbook."
Some media reports on Thursday speculated that the long delay since her last album could be due to the illness, first diagnosed in 2008.
The 39 year-old Elliott talks about her Graves' disease in a taped interview for the VH1 cable show "Behind the Music" set to air on June 29. She describes how it shut down her nervous system and caused her hair to fall out.
But on Friday, Elliott said her condition has recently improved.
"Under my doctor's supervision, I've been off medication for about a year and I'm completely managing the condition through diet and exercise," she said.
Patients with Graves' disease have a thyroid gland that overproduces the hormone thyroxine, which can affect a person's appearance and energy level.
The disease is incurable, but symptoms can be handled with treatment, according to medical organization the Mayo Clinic.
Elliott said on Friday that, far from being inactive, she has since her diagnosis toured Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia and written and produced Grammy-nominated songs for Monica, Keyshia Cole and Jazmine Sullivan.
Elliott is working on an album tentatively titled "Block Party," with producer and rapper Timbaland.  [Reuters]

Your LookTell Who You Are.

                                                           Amara

I used to be one of such people who felt it didn’t matter what I looked like. I used to believe I could wear whatever I wanted as long as my spouse approved of it. I used to feel I could look crazy outside, but very decent inside. I was one person who used to love going to the extreme when it came to clothes/fashion.
Yesterday I was discussing with some of my friends on Facebook, we came to a conclusion that we should be careful about our looks because it says a lot about us. I used to dress in such a way that people who were not close to me saw me as one crazy Lagos girl who was so involved with society life.
People who knew me before now know there are changes in Amara. I used to carry my hair pure blonde with my long bright red polished nails and some crazy clothes on me. The first impression people used to have about me was that of a club girl who was just enjoying her life.
But I was a different person, entirely different from what I appeared to be outside. I remember some years back, when I went to help a woman in my estate who had a new baby (I find joy doing this). I was the one cooking, washing, cleaning and going to the market for her. Then one day, the husband came to me while I was cooking and said, “Amara, I never knew you were this humble. I used to see you as a very arrogant and crazy person, but my wife continued telling me how nice you are.” I laughed and then told the man, to his utmost surprise that I have never gone clubbing in my life, I don’t party, I don’t keep too many friends, I rarely visit people, and I don’t take alcohol.

30+ and employers. • Agonies of the unemployed, over-aged graduates

In many advertorials for employment, there is usually an age bar which always restricts job seekers nearing 30 from applying for jobs.  The reasons behind this and concludes that, aside the redefining of the middle class age, continual disruptions in school calendar make an applicant older than he should be at graduation.

Big Brother Africa: Vina using the Power of One!

Only one Heads housemate is not up for eviction this week.  And that person  is Vina, this week’s Head of House. You know, like there’s a boulder on her shoulder. Aaaaah well!
OK, it is kind of a double-edged sword. Everyone was nominated except for Felicia, so when it came to doing the compulsory switch, Vina felt she was caught between the conventional rock and a hard place.
But hey, a girl’s got to do what a girl’s got to do. She told Biggie she’d thought about saving someone else but, as she’d been up three times in a row, it was time to give fans a chance to save someone else.
Still, she left the Chat Room a stress mess.
So yip, eight Heads heads are in the firing line, and in two cases it involves two housemates from the same country: Vimbai and Wendall from Zimbabwe, and Lomwe and Felicia from Malawi.

Don’t talk about my ex-man, Kenny St Brown

Recently, Kenny was sighted at the launch of the DJ’s Association of Nigeria, DJAN, held in Ikeja, Lagos, where Shwotime Celebrity engaged her in a chat. But she would not stand the mention of her ex-hubby’s name Eddie.
Why are you at this event?
I really thank God for the life of these DJ’s. You know they have brought a lot of celebrations into lives, into homes, they brought a lot of celebration to the lives of musicians, they’ve brought a lot of content to the radio and television and other media channels.
Yet they have been grossly neglected and so now that they have come together to be one, it is now time for them to be put in the position that they belong. Just look at hip hop music, five or ten years ago, there was nothing for us, even me rebranding, music then wasnt speaking one language. It only the DJ’s who had the enthuaism, the energy and they have been able to pull through and remain relevant all these years. I am very happry for them.
Many of these DJ’s work with radio stations, many will think your support here is a facade; that your attending the event to persuade them into playing your songs more often?
That’s ridiculous! It would be selfish to think they are only going to be playing my songs. They can only give me five minutes in their whole segment of hours. That couldn’t translate into me taking over air play with my songs.
Even without me being here they have been doing that. It’s just that it feels good when you know there is symbiotic relationship. You know artists are, selfish, forgetfull, ingrates if I could call them that, but we from Kennis music stables want to tell them that not all artitste are like that. As we go up, they deserve as DJs to go up too. This is why we are here to support them because they have been here before we got here. When we go they will still be here.
They deserve to go up, they deserve branding themselves. Thank God for DJ Jimmy Jat, he has done so well. But we think that there should be more diffusion here. Corporate bodies should stop cuing behind one DJ until he has time before they can do shows. There are a lot of other DJ’s out there that are equally very good. Jimmy is a land lord in Lagos, I believe the others too deserve the same, they should be smiling to the banks as well. They don’t have to be on the radio chanting their names, majority of them are street Djs, they deserve all the patronage and support they can get.
Let us move to your music career now. What’s on the table for you now?
What’s next for me now is the fact that I have rebranded from mainstream church Gospel to street gospel. That is; taking the gospel from the church to the streets with my song; reaching the unreached. It is not everybody that you put on serious gospel tunes that get tuned to it. Most times, you have to do it in their own language, in the way they know it, in their own way of life. You catch their attention so that they can work with the content of the song and that is why I first worked with Dagrin. He is a street boy; he helped me take my work to the streets.
I later worked with Ice prince in a song called ‘Alaye’ – now that is a street language. I also just released a video, a few weeks ago with TerryG. It’s a swagger. And the song is called ‘Mo ti gun oke’ It’s a victory song. I called it double swagger and guess what we are preaching, if your God dey dull you, then try our own God, he is Jehovah el Swagger (laughs). All the youths know understand is swagger swagger. If that is the language, I want to sell God to them that way then. I also did another song with MI called Suger suger, and with Eldee called Live your life. These are the videos I want to drop before the year runs out.
We hear you have a new company?
Yes the company is called Eva laviva. It is a comapny I set up to take care of all female entertainers including female Djs. Our female entertainers are not getting the patronage as they should get.
Look at girls in Nollywood girls getting all the patronage and branding but then it is the singers that are getting all the national and international awards. MTV Base, MAMA, Channel 0, Soundcity you name it and they are not getting patronage like that. Sasha, is right now MTV Base Africa number one female artiste, yet you won’t see someone branding Sasha. Ok, Mocheda got a very small branding from a hair company but this is a girl with a Channel O awards, as the MTV base new female artiste in Africa, no one is getting celebrated for it.
No government has called them to office and said this is the reward. No recognition anyware. When Kanu was footballer of the year, he was given an award. This is exactly what Eve laviva wants to cater for; to bring about that visibilty and create that positive image that will bring about the patronage and honour to our female entertainers. It’s not a Kenny St brown thing, it’s what my heart cry out for that the girls be celebrated.
Let’s go more personal now, how is your daughter?
My daughter is great, she goes to school with her brother.
How is their relationship with their father?
(Composure changes, she angrilly shakes her head and gives a ‘NO’ hand sign) That is not part of why we are here.
We know but…
That is not why we are here.
You don’t want to talk about Eddie for any reason?
I don’t. Definitely.
We just want to know how the relationship has been between them and their father?
I can only be a mother, I can’t be both mother and father. As a single parent, you can only be a mother. You can’t both. God can give you the grace to cope by making the resources available and so you are aome how able to play the role but when it comes to the emotional feeding, that balances up parenting where there is a mother and father, it just isnt there. In terms of the connection, I can only be mummy, I can’t be daddy. It the way things are for now.
